今からさかのぼること15年ほど前。ちょうどモーハウス創業の頃。
世の中で初めて、子連れ出勤を評価してくれたように思う河合蘭さんの文章をご紹介します。

… 母親が産休あけからフルタイムの勤務に出ていたので、私にとって、母親が働き続けるのは空気のように自然なことだった。女性は、家にいるべき、と思ったかとはない。とはいえ、１１年前に初めての子が生まれたとき、子供時代の思い出が、やっぱり私を休業させた。何冊かの雑誌でカメラマンをしていたのだが、すべての編集部に休業宣言した。
ところが、やっぱり満たされない。本を読んでもテレビを見ても、仕入れた知識が仕事に注げないことが何か耐え難くむなしかった。そんなある日、子どもが一歳になったら仕事しよう、と決心したきっかけは、テレビでみかん畑の中継を見たことだった。そこでは家族が総出でみかんを収穫していて、そのそばには、赤ちゃんがハンモックのようなもので眠っていた。その光景を見て、私は、仕事も、子供を産み育てるのも、どちらも人間にとってどちらも同じくらい当然のことと思った。そもそも、仕事と子育てをぷっつり切ったのは、いったい誰なのか。
みかん畑の親子になりたい！私の初仕事は、都会のサラリーマン家庭とはまったく違う育児を描くという企画記事だった。しかし実際には、結局そこで偶然産婆さんのお産に出会ってものすごい感銘を受けたため、育児ライターになりそこない、お産ライターになってしまった。仕事も育児も、実際にはぎりぎりで、子連れ仕事など考える余裕もなかった。
だが今回私は、３人目にして、まだ子どもの首もすわりきらないうちから仕事を再開して取材につれ歩いた。いろいろなご迷惑があったと思うが、都会の真ん中でみかん畑のまねごとをさせていただけたことを、心から感謝している。子どもが７ヶ月になり、母乳がなくても少しはお留守番が出来るようになってきたこのごろ、振り返ると本当にありがたい。小学生の時から、女性が働くことと子どもの関係を考えてきた。その結論を実行させていただいたような気がする。この半年間の子連れ仕事は、忘れられない。
